Mireukjeon - The Hall to Maitreya

This is the Hall of Maitreya, Buddha of the Future.  It was built in 1889 by the monk, Uiryong.  It is located to the right of the main courtyard between the Hall of Vairocana and the entrance to the Zen Center.

Maitreya is the Buddha of the Future; the last of five earthly Buddhas that will appear on this earth.  He dwells now in the Tusita heaven, where the historic Buddha dwelt before he was born.  Maitreya is called "Mireuk" in Korean and was a very popular figure when Buddhism first came to Korea during the Three Kingdoms Period.
